It was the High Priest who gave the sacrifice of the Day of Atonement for the people of Israel. This sacrifice was given once a year on the tenth day of the seventh month in the Israeli calendar. On this day, as the High Priest Aaron gave the offering on behalf of the people of Israel for their sake, all their iniquities were actually passed onto this offering of sacrifice and cleansed away. The Day of Atonement therefore became the greatest festival for the people of Israel.
